The four friends sat in the park watching Mr.Tan pick his way through groups of playing children and young chattering mothers. As he hobbled past a group of young football players, a football flew up and landed at his feet.

A cackle of children’s voices rose, “Grandpa, here!” “Grandpa, give it to me!” Mr. Tan picked up the ball and looked from one boy to the next. Standing several feet away from him, hands extended, hopping impatiently for the ball, they all looked at him expectantly. To whom should he throw it?

Just then, a little fellow broke away from the group, and whooping with excitement, he ran up to Mr. Tan and neatly took the ball from his hand. “Thank you, Grandpa,” he said breathlessly and ran away kicking the ball with the whole horde of boys chasing him with yells of protest.

Mr. Tan laughed and laughed as he settled down with his friends. “Any of them could have run up to me, but only he did it. The others allowed me to take a decision, this one made the decision for me. He was smart.” “Yes,” chipped in Marina. “To recognize and convert an opportunity is a great talent.”

Mr. Tan nodded. “There are opportunities everywhere. We see only some obvious ones. Enterprising people see opportunities everywhere. Even where they are not obvious.”

He grew reflective and the others looked at him curiously. “I can see a story brewing,” chimed Marina with a smile. “It is a pleasant evening and we could do with one of your stories, Mr. Tan.”

The Power of a Mother

Finally a magazine for Senior Citizens has come to the newsstand for the public to read. There are many reading materials published for children, teenagers, men and women and now, it is time to publish one for our golden people.

Although this magazine is meant for the Senior Citizens, the articles contributed are for the benefit of all. All are welcomed to write, contribute, participate and comment. This is the inaugural issue and is packed with a lot of information, activities, events, health tips, interviews and biographies. Wisdom comes with age.

Likewise, senior citizens’ expertise, knowledge and advice are valuable assets to the younger generation. Aging is not only a seniority of calendar years but also an accumulation of wisdom. As we progress technologically, the humanitarian aspect of helping people should not be forgotten.

Progression of arts and science is the acquisition and execution of knowledge and progression of age is the combination of perseverance, righteousness and sense control which produces wisdom. Age is not confined to numbers; aging is a biological process not a psychological one. So long as your psyche is strong, you do not age.
