Nancy Elliot's Story

The true story of Thomas Alva Edison, one of modern humanity’s greatest and most celebrated inventor, is a classic example of how the power of one parent’s thinking can shape the attitude of her child and consequently the future of the world.

Young Thomas attended three different schools between the ages of seven and nine and never fitted in. At every school he went to, he was extremely talkative, couldn’t sit still and asked far too many questions than his teachers could handle. Edison’s mother, Nancy Elliot, was incensed when one teacher said her son was “unteachable” and had an “addled” (meaning confused or stupid) brain. She withdrew him from school and went ahead to teach him at home.

Young Thomas loved to explore and experiment. His mother encouraged his keen interest for science and the family’s cellar became his laboratory. Many years later, Edison would refer to his mother as, “the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had someone to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” Throughout his lifetime, Edison went on to patent 1,093 inventions, the most famous of which was the incandescent light bulb.

The support from his mother gave Edison the strength to ward off the emotional and psychological blows thrown at him by others who doubted his natural abilities. It was his mother who taught Edison to trust himself and to turn a blind eye to the ridicule of others. Edison learned early in life that nothing could replace his mother’s love and faith in him. Thomas Edison became such an important figure in history because his mother fully understood how different he was from the other kids and did not see this as a weakness. Rather, she made it her mission to fulfill his unique needs, firmly believing that she could make a difference.

Finally a magazine for Senior Citizens has come to the newsstand for the public to read. There are many reading materials published for children, teenagers, men and women and now, it is time to publish one for our golden people.

Although this magazine is meant for the Senior Citizens, the articles contributed are for the benefit of all. All are welcomed to write, contribute, participate and comment. This is the inaugural issue and is packed with a lot of information, activities, events, health tips, interviews and biographies. Wisdom comes with age.

Likewise, senior citizens’ expertise, knowledge and advice are valuable assets to the younger generation. Aging is not only a seniority of calendar years but also an accumulation of wisdom. As we progress technologically, the humanitarian aspect of helping people should not be forgotten.

Progression of arts and science is the acquisition and execution of knowledge and progression of age is the combination of perseverance, righteousness and sense control which produces wisdom. Age is not confined to numbers; aging is a biological process not a psychological one. So long as your psyche is strong, you do not age.
