If you think you are sharp and dynamic, you become so.

Ageing is a natural phenomenon that can be explained in myriad ways – biologically, psychologically, economically and socially. The ageing population has now become the centre of global attention, mainly because it is growing in numbers. In the years to come, this booming generation will be a force to reckon with similar to Gen X today.

Biologically, the human system is bound to grow and perish. In this perspective, ageing is basically a decline in the functioning of the cells. There are certain ageing genes in our cells which promote cell death. This contributes to body weakness and decay.

In multi-cellular organisms, including humans, there is a timer which is genetically encoded in the DNA indicating the life-span for each cell. These cells then self-destruct. That is one of the reasons as to why the physical body doesn’t stay young forever. This cellular phenomenon is known as apoptosis. The effect of apoptosis is that the function of each organ of the body begins to deteriorate - their productivity will be systematically reduced. It is possible to counter this effect by ageing gracefully.Read on to find out how.

The easiest way is to resort to anti-aging therapy or drugs. However, the best way to treat physical ageing is the organic method, that is, by taking fresh fruits and vegetables (uncooked is better). Good health comes from within. Understand that it is better to eat a peach rather than use it for your face as facial mask. Also, try juicing (fruits & vegetables). The fresher your food is, the better it is for your health. Usually, in cooked foods, 75 percent of the nutrients get destroyed.

Finally a magazine for Senior Citizens has come to the newsstand for the public to read. There are many reading materials published for children, teenagers, men and women and now, it is time to publish one for our golden people.

Although this magazine is meant for the Senior Citizens, the articles contributed are for the benefit of all. All are welcomed to write, contribute, participate and comment. This is the inaugural issue and is packed with a lot of information, activities, events, health tips, interviews and biographies. Wisdom comes with age.

Likewise, senior citizens’ expertise, knowledge and advice are valuable assets to the younger generation. Aging is not only a seniority of calendar years but also an accumulation of wisdom. As we progress technologically, the humanitarian aspect of helping people should not be forgotten.

Progression of arts and science is the acquisition and execution of knowledge and progression of age is the combination of perseverance, righteousness and sense control which produces wisdom. Age is not confined to numbers; aging is a biological process not a psychological one. So long as your psyche is strong, you do not age.
