Smart home technology improves the quality of living among seniors

Technology is set to improve the quality of life of seniors in the near future. Sensors and intelligent monitoring systems are capable of doing wonders – from saving the cost of lighting to saving the life of an elderly person living alone. These devices will unobtrusively monitor the seniors in the comfort of their home.

It is important that seniors stay in control of their lives and be treated with dignity. Getting old shouldn’t be an obstacle to live independent lives. Yet, like it or not, seniors must concede that they are not as nimble or limber as they were before. Now technology offers them a way to enjoy their independence while getting all the care and attention that is necessary.

The terms smart homes, intelligent homes and home networking have been in use for more than a decade now. A smart home can be defined as the integration of technology and services through home networking for having a good quality of living. Other terms that are related to smart homes are aware house, changeable home, attentive house and ambient intelligence.

Installing sensors in the house can monitor an elderly person’s daily routine without intrusive cameras or microphones. Simple motion sensors can detect how often the homeowner goes into the kitchen and other parts of the house. Temperature sensors can tell how often the stove is on or the fridge door is opened. Humidity sensors in the kitchen and bathroom show if the homeowner is regularly using the sink or the shower. Gait monitors are sensors on the floor that can measure changes in the person’s walking abilities and detect a fall.

Finally a magazine for senior citizens has come to the newsstand for the public to read. There are many reading materials published for children, teenagers, men and women and now, it is time to publish one for our golden people.Although this magazine is meant for the senior citizens, the articles published are for the benefit of all. All are welcomed to associate, contribute, participate and comment. The magazine is packed with a lot of information on biographies of personalities, health, travel, technology, finance & law, lifestyle and aging forums & events.

Wisdom comes with age, likewise, senior citizens’ expertise, knowledge and advice are valuable assets to the younger generation. Aging is not only a seniority of calendar years but also an accumulation of wisdom. As we advance technologically, the humanitarian aspect of helping people should not be forgotten. Progression of arts and science is the acquisition and execution of knowledge and progression of age is the combination of forbearance, righteousness and sense control which produces wisdom. Age is not confined to numbers; aging is a biological process not a psychological one.

As James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States said, “If wrinkles must be written upon our brows, let them not be written upon the heart. The spirit should never grow old.” So long as your psyche is strong, you do not age.
