Stretch of beach in Pasir Panjang, Pulau Redang

The first thing that hits you upon reaching Redang Island is how remarkably beautiful the place is. The view is exactly what you see on a Cuti-Cuti Malaysia beach ad – sparkly emerald blue water, soft white sands and coconut trees (and perhaps a sampan or two).

Except, of course, this is real. You can feel the sand between your feet and the breeze running through your hair. The air is tinged with the salty scent of the sea and you can hear the waves gently lapping onto the beach. And, before you can help yourself, you subconsciously break into a smile.

The island, which rests 45 km northeast of Kuala Terengganu, is a gem which had just been discovered in the late 1980s. In fact, prior to the Cantonese drama, ‘Summer Holiday’, Redang was pretty much one of Malaysia’s best-kept secrets.

The simplest way to get to Redang is to fly direct on Berjaya Air from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Being the cheapskate that I am, during my first trip to the island, I sat on an overnight coach that stopped twice throughout the eight-hour journey. This time though, I opted to go by car.

Driving to Redang is rather tricky as there are only two jetties currently that the resorts use to ferry visitors to the island (Merang and Shahbandar). Often, people lose their way – due to the tragically nonstrategic locations of highway signboards – and end up in an altogether different place, Marang.

Redang Island has everything that you need for a fun island getaway – great beaches, warm tropical waters and plenty to do during the day and night times. So book yourself a room and start packing!

Finally a magazine for senior citizens has come to the newsstand for the public to read. There are many reading materials published for children, teenagers, men and women and now, it is time to publish one for our golden people.Although this magazine is meant for the senior citizens, the articles published are for the benefit of all. All are welcomed to associate, contribute, participate and comment. The magazine is packed with a lot of information on biographies of personalities, health, travel, technology, finance & law, lifestyle and aging forums & events.

Wisdom comes with age, likewise, senior citizens’ expertise, knowledge and advice are valuable assets to the younger generation. Aging is not only a seniority of calendar years but also an accumulation of wisdom. As we advance technologically, the humanitarian aspect of helping people should not be forgotten. Progression of arts and science is the acquisition and execution of knowledge and progression of age is the combination of forbearance, righteousness and sense control which produces wisdom. Age is not confined to numbers; aging is a biological process not a psychological one.

As James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States said, “If wrinkles must be written upon our brows, let them not be written upon the heart. The spirit should never grow old.” So long as your psyche is strong, you do not age.
